Smith Optics Evolve Techology
Sunglass: By utilizing a new material called Rilsan® Clear, we are creating lightweight, durable, and fully transparent sunglass frames that are over 53% bio-based. Created from easily renewable, non-
genetically modified castor plants, Rilsan® Clear frame is combined with FSC certified packaging and
a coconut fiber storage bag. Not to be forgotten, each logo plaque is "finished" with a clear water-
based protective coating. The end result is a fully considered sunglass and a clearer conscience.
Goggle: In 2008, we introduced goggles made from 96% re-ground urethane. Utilizing recycled material from
other companies, we reduced our dependency on virgin urethane. As the next step in our Evolve
program, we have integrated Merquinsa's Pearlthane ECO bio-TPU into our goggle line wherever
possible. This material is composed of 40% bio-based material, derived from plant-based oils
separate from the world’s food supply. Simply put, this new material performs equally as well as
traditional urethane while contributing up to 40% fewer global warming emissions in the
manufacturing of the material.
Helmet: For Smith Evolve helmets, we're utilizing Evolve X-Static, a full feature X-Static fabric that maintains
its high level of performance while being ecologically friendly by using sustainable and renewable
raw materials. Evolve X-Static is initially made by blending up to 50% recycled silver with other recycled
materials to create a performance fabric that is 3.7% X-Static and 96.3% recycled polyester. Fabrics
are then recycled at the end of their lifecycle to recover the silver content for further use. Evolve
X-Static has earned the Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 accreditation, which certifies that they support
human ecology through biocompatibility and the absence of harmful substances in the
manufacturing process.
Packaging: Our Evolve packaging has been minimized and made from recycled and recyclable post-consumer
products and uses vegetable based inks. All of our Evolve packaging is FSC certified.

Patagonia
Common Threads Garment Recycling Program: Way too much of what is made these days ends up in the trash at the end of its useful life. At Patagonia, they are actively working to change that. In 2005, Patagonia launched their Common Threads Garment Recycling Program, through which customers could return their worn out Capilene® Performance Baselayers for recycling. Since then, Patagonia has been able to expand the list of recyclable garments to include worn out Patagonia® fleece, Polartec® fleece clothing (from any maker), Patagonia cotton T-shirts, and now some additional polyester and nylon 6 products that carry the Common Threads tag.
